DAVID IS A KING HEIT002

David is a King, also known as Dirty Danger of Ruff Sqwad, is a true pioneer in grime music. In the early 2000s, he produced seminal white label tracks that have since become grime classics, including the iconic Together by Ruff Sqwad. His innovative production helped shape the sound and spirit of the genre at its inception.

Building on his grime roots, David has evolved his musical journey into sound healing — a profound and immersive practice that layers native drums, sound bowls, vocals with words of affirmation, ambient music, gongs, chimes, and more. This unique approach offers a transformative musical experience that bridges heritage and sonic mastery.

On August 6th, HEIT had the honour of hosting an exclusive live sound healing session with David. The recording from this special event is now released as his submission to the HEIT series. It stands as a deeply moving and extraordinary addition to our ongoing exploration of sound.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Peace to anybody that is listening to (or reading) this right now.
My name is David Is A King. I’m from East London, Bow, and I’m super excited to share this experience with you so you can feel the vibrations and energies of right now.

For a lot of people, it comes as a shock [that I now practice in sound therapy] because they know me as Dirty Danger from Ruff Sqwad, and I produced a lot of grime beats that helped shape the scene and make it what it is today.
As time has gone on, I’ve evolved with my sound. I still tap into grime, but this is what I resonate with right now. This is what my spirit has called me to do.

What is sound therapy to you?

For those that don’t know what sound therapy is: to me, it’s just a guided meditation through sound. I believe that sound impacts our thoughts, our feelings, and our emotions on a day-to-day basis. For instance, someone can give you a compliment and you feel happy inside — it can make you smile. Or someone could give you some bad news and it can mess up your day completely. And that is all done through the vibration of sound.

You may go to a festival or rave and not even be aware that you’ve just entered a guided meditation through sound. Whether that be jazz, rock, hip-hop, trance, or jungle music — the DJ is in control.
Sometimes I like to see myself as a spiritual DJ because I set the intention of going in and giving out vibrations of love, healing, clarity, and relaxation.

How did you approach the mix?

What’s inspired me to do this work and create this mix? I would have to say nature. Big up nature, man.
It’s allowed me to heal, it’s allowed me to be my most authentic self, it’s allowed me to grow and evolve. And through this, I’ve managed to pick up instruments like the Native American flute and teach myself to a higher standard — just through breathing and doing some breath work. And now it’s allowed me to help others. I’ve gone into prisons [to perform sound healing sessions], I’ve gone into schools, and I’ve helped people with their anxiety and depression. I’ve given them clarity. I’ve given them peace. And I’m just grateful that I’ve been chosen to be on this path.

This mix is about the light and the dark, and embracing all those elements inside of yourself. Allowing yourself to feel every single part that belongs to you, and releasing what no longer serves you. So when you do take a moment to listen to this, meditate. Close your eyes. Breathe — in through the nose, out through the mouth — and receive.

Enjoy the mix and follow HEIT on SoundCloud for more downtempo journeys.
