WAX MATERIAL HEIT001

Wax Material, a London-based artist who also runs a mobile record store under the same name. Having developed her sound in Ibiza and Romania, Wax Material is known for upbeat, party-ready sets packed with deep, minimal grooves, cheeky basslines, stripped-back house, minimal garage, 2-step, swung jazz, and textural minimal. She regularly plays for renowned events such as Slapfunk, Beeyou, and is a regular at UK festivals such as Gottwood.

For this special Glastonbury set, Wax Material took a different approach — creating a smooth, mellow journey with a selection of rare and cherished records quietly collected over the years. These are the kinds of tracks often kept to herself — enjoyed in private moments, rather than shared on dance floors — making this mix a unique window into that side of her musical world.

Launching HEIT with this recording felt like the perfect way to set the tone for the series.

Here at HEIT’s blog, it’s a home to go deeper with each mix. For Wax Material’s Glastonbury set, you’ll find a personal voice note and reflection sharing how this gentle, downtempo journey came together, alongside an image she’s chosen to pair with the music. A quiet corner of HEIT to slow down, discover, and take a closer peak into Wax Material’s world.

How did you approach the mix?

It was the first time that I ever recorded a mix of this genre. Usually, I play much faster, much more party music. I was invited to play at Glastonbury Festival, and my set time was on Sunday morning at 12:00. So for me, there was only one direction that this was going to go in, and I just wanted to make it smooth and wake people up nicely in a really pleasant manner. So that was my approach to the mix.

What makes this mix quite special is that I sell records and have been selling records for quite a long time. My record store is also called Wax Material.

In the time that I've had the shop [Wax Material] every now and then I come across special pieces of music, whether it be jazz or lo-fi or hip hop or more chilled out genres. I've always kept them to the side and never really played them, as I said, especially in front of people; It would just be in my room or on a Sunday morning in particular. So I took this as an opportunity to showcase years and years of quietly collecting these records and showcasing them at, well, the best festival in the world, in a lot of people's opinion, including mine; Glastonbury.

So that was my approach. There's a lot of special tracks throughout.

Do you have any special shout outs for tracks you featured in the mix?

There was a one particular album by a DJ called...  I'm just picking up the record now, A Beatmaker Named Cratehead; On this album, there is 20 tracks, and each one is dedicated to a drink, like an alcoholic drink. Not always alcoholic, actually. So you've got like Hennessy, Milk, Fiji, Water, etc. Really, really nice album.

Listening to the Drink album by A Beat Maker Named Cratehead transported Wax Material back to this image she took in Brighton on her old school camera.

My second shout out is a friend of mine, a very, very dear friend of mine; Kirsty, who also goes by the name of Astoria. She created a seventy-one minute piece of music and never released it, she just sent it to me to listen to. I actually play the track through the whole set. If you listen carefully, you can hear it comes in and out, it gets louder and quieter. I wanted that track to be the base, the foundations of the mix, and it runs the whole way through, rarely pausing to come out.

I hope you enjoy the mix. Peace out.
